Automatic Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems

Team Of Specialists

NextGen Fire’s team of specialists and technicians are registered with SAQCC-Fire D&GS to install and service Gas Suppression Systems. We provide advise and guidance on the type of system best suited to your needs. NextGen Fire will design a layout, do the installation as well as maintains these systems to meet all your requirements.

Automatic Powder Fire Extinguishers

Automatic powder fire extinguishers are designed for installation for areas where an increased discharge range is required. The units are ideal for applications such as engine compartments, engine rooms and storage areas.

Automatic Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems

Automatic gaseous fire suppression systems are installed to suppress fires either automatically or manually. It functions by releasing an inert gas, or mixture of gases, into the air with the aim of extinguishing and/or preventing the fire spread within a building. A Gas Suppression System leaves no residue and is designed to protect enclosures which require a quick reaction to extinguishing a fire and would not be suitable for a sprinkler system. These systems are installed in Server Rooms, Archive Rooms, MCC Rooms, Telecoms environments etc. where a fire can cause a large loss in equipment, downtime or revenue.

Audit & Risk Assessment

NextGen Fire’s team will consult with the client to determine their needs and what the best system would be to fit in with their budget. This process often involves educating the client on what are the latest systems available as well as the pros and cons of the different systems. There are several factors that determine which type of gas suppression system to use, key among them being the volume of the room to be protected, the contents inside the room, the cylinder mounting position, the altitude of the area where the system will be installed and several other factors.

Fire Gas Suppression System Service

As per SANS 14520 a gas suppression system needs to be serviced at a minimum every 6 months.

NextGen Fire prides itself on keeping our clients compliant and safe. Services are available either upon request, by reminder or through a Service Level Agreement (SLA) taking the headache and human error out of remembering to have your system serviced timeously.

Systems are serviced in accordance with SANS 14520.

Fire Gas Suppression System Design

SANS 14520 is the national standard for gas suppression systems which specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of gaseous firefighting systems. NextGen Fire works strictly according to this standard.

Fire Gas Suppression System New Installations

The installation and use of gaseous extinguishing systems is a clean, safe, electrically non conducting method for the suppression of fires but present dangers to contractors and end users if installed by persons not skilled in this area of expertise. Some of these systems store gas at pressures up to 300 bar and should be handled with care. The design and installation of these systems is complex and should only be done by competent and experienced persons. Persons handling gaseous suppression systems have to be registered with SAQCC Fire as authorised, competent persons – gas extinguishing.

FM-200 (HFC227ea)

Otherwise known as FM-200® trademarked through DuPontTM, this fast-acting fire protection system has a history of preventing fire damage to the world’s most crucial and irreplaceable assets.

DuPontTM FM-200® is one of the most widely used clean agent fire suppression systems in the world. Unlike dry chemicals, the FM-200® is a colourless, odourless gas that leaves no residue and does not require any clean-ups. This system discharges gas quickly and effectively, reaching extinguishing levels in 10 seconds or less.

Introduced as a replacement for Halon gas, HFC227ea is an environmentally friendly fire suppressant and is safe to use in occupied spaces. The FM-200® meets international fire protection standards, including the NFPA 2001: Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems and the ISO-14520: Gaseous Fire Extinguishing Systems.

These systems are used to stop combustible, electrical, and flammable liquid fires before they cause severe damage. Additionally, it is an electrically non-conductive agent, which means it will not short out electronics. It is also safe to be used in the presence of people.

Novec

The 3MTM NovecTM 1230, also known as the FK-5-1-12 extinguishing agent, is a fire protection fluid and clean agent that acts as a fire extinguisher. This system discharges in ten seconds or less to extinguish fires rapidly and minimize damage to assets.

NovecTM 1230 and FM-200® share many similar properties, however, they are different chemical compounds. NovecTM 1230 is a fluoroketone, whereas FM-200® is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC). The difference is that NovecTM 1230 is a more environmentally friendly clean agent than FM-200® and has a lower global warming potential (GWP).

It contains carbon, fluoride, and oxygen elements and is safe to be used in buildings occupied by humans. NovecTM 1230 fluid is typically used to protect electronic equipment and the data stored on it from fire damage. It is also used as a fire protection solution for valuable and irreplaceable assets such as paper archives, historical documents, priceless works of art, and antiques.

CO2

The 3MTM NovecTA carbon dioxide fire suppression system dispels a heavy blanket of gas that reduces the oxygen level to a point where combustion cannot occur.

A fire needs 3 elements to ignite and burn: heat, oxygen and fuel. If one of these elements is removed, the fire will be extinguished. A CO2 fire suppression system eliminates oxygen in order to suppress and extinguish a fire.

Since carbon dioxide is a gas, there is no clean-up necessary after this system is discharged. This gas fire protection system type is highly effective and available for use in various scenarios to suppress a variety of fire hazards.

CO2 gas suppression systems are not safe for occupiable spaces. Prolonged exposure to the gas can cause suffocation and asphyxiation to humans. CO2 fire suppression systems are mostly used in non-occupied spaces such as engine rooms, generator rooms, power stations, server rooms, and around large industrial machines.

Due to CO2 systems not being safe for human life, these systems are becoming less popular and being replaced by systems that are safer for supporting life.

Inergen

The Inert Gas Fire Suppression System is a breathable gaseous extinguishing agent consisting of mixtures of various inert gas types. The most common mixture includes Nitrogen (52%), Argon (40%), and Carbon Dioxide (8%).

No other inert gas can rapidly extinguish a fire and simultaneously provide a safe environment for any person within the occupied space. As it only consists of natural gases, Inergen® fire suppression systems are able to extinguish fires without causing harm to people, property or the environment.

Inergen® is designed to detect smoke, release the extinguishing gas and subdue the fire before any significant damage occurs. It is intended to exceed the requirements of the World Standard for Gaseous fire extinguishing systems.

Low-Pressure Water Mist

The water mist fire suppression system is a highly effective extinguishing system that uses water and air to generate fine water droplets. These water droplets create a mist that covers a large surface area to contain and extinguish a fire.

The system uses less water per discharge than any traditional sprinkler. Post-discharge cleaning time is therefore minor, and significant damages and losses are minimized.

The Low-Pressure Water Mist System effectively extinguishes a fire in mere seconds and, unlike gaseous systems, is highly effective even when limited ventilation is present.

Stat-X Aerosol Fire Suppression

Stat-X® fire suppression is an advanced aerosol technology that protects enclosed special hazards. Aerosols are an effective new alternative to traditional special hazard fire protection. Stat-X fire suppression is currently used worldwide in many critical applications. Stat-X aerosol fire suppression should be considered when evaluating the use of halon substitutes, CO2, inert gas, dry chemical, or water mist. Stat-X fire suppression is an approved halon replacement and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) alternative.

Vehicle Fire Suppression

Vehicle Fire Suppression systems are specifically designed to preotect engine compartments against fire. In the event of an engine fire these systems will ensure passenger safety by extinguishing the fire and help prevent re-ignition. As a result material damage is also minimized.
