Active Fire Protection
A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. An extinguisher is used by directing onto the fire the stored agent that cools the burning material, depriving the flame of oxygen or interferes with the chemical reaction occurring in the flame.
Control Small Fires
Fire extinguishers are intended to be used to control a small fire before it becomes out of control and endangers the user and requires the expertise of the fire brigade to put out. By containing a fire before it becomes out of control, not only will it help protect the lives of people in the area but also minimize the damage and loss to your assets.
Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguishers
Class A, B & C Fires
Powder fire extinguishers are suitable for use on class A, class B and class C fires but are used in different ways depending on the type of fire they are being used on.
Versatile & Highly Effective
Dry Chemical Powder fire extinguishers are a versatile and highly effective medium to control all fires. They have been proven to be effective in extinguishing electrical fires, combustible fires and fires from flammable liquids.
Maintenance
DCP Extinguishers must be serviced every 12 months (or sooner) to ensure general maintenance in accordance with SABS standards. The dial on the gauge must point on the green, indicating that the extinguisher is sufficiently charged. Extinguishers which are older than five years should go through a pressure test, and powder must be checked. Please see Services for more about the maintenance of DCP fire extinguishers.
CO2 Fire Extinguishers
Electrical Fires
CO2 fire extinguishers are mainly aimed at electrical fires but are also suitable for Class B liquid fires and are used in different ways depending on the type of fire they are being used on. . CO2 is not only a highly efficient chemical for fighting fires, it also very clean and doesn’t leave a mess.
Maintenance
CO2 Extinguishers must be serviced every 12 months (or sooner) in compliance with SABS standards. Extinguishers must also go through a hydrostatic testing every 10 years ensuring the strength of the cylinder. Please see Services for more about the maintenance of CO2 extinguishers.
Foam Fire Extinguishers
Multi-Risk Situations
Foam fire extinguishers contain foam that rapidly creates a film, smothering the fire’s oxygen and knocking down its flames. They are ideal for multi-risk situation where both Class A, combustible materials and Class B, flammable liquid and gases, are likely to be found, or where Class B risks represent a direct hazard.
Maintenance
Foam Extinguishers must be serviced every 12 months (or sooner) to ensure general maintenance in accordance with SABS standards. Extinguishers which are older than five years should go through a pressure test, and foam must be checked. Please see Services for more about the maintenance of foam fire extinguishers.
Water Fire Extinguishers
Ideal for Ordinary Combustibles
Water Fire Extinguishers are effective on Class A fires, ordinary combustibles. Water Fire Extinguishers are ideal for use in an office environment when used in conjunction with a Carbon Dioxide (Co2) Fire Extinguisher.
